Cedar Rapids man pleads not guilty to killing neighbor

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Cedar Rapids man has pleaded not guilty to killing his neighbor in September.

Jerome Power, 48, is charged with First Degree Murder in the death of his neighbor, 68-year old Doris Bevins, on Sept. 19.

Cedar Rapids Police say Bevins was assaulted inside her apartment and later died from her injuries.

Officers were called to 1211 5th Avenue SE #2 at around 11:17 that night.  When they arrived, they found Bevins had been assaulted.  They say Power, who lived in the same building, was also in the apartment.

Power made his written plea in Linn County District Court on Monday.

A trial date has not been set.
