SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -- When Sioux City East beat Bishop Heelan Tuesday night in a battle of undefeated teams, the best player on the floor was the biggest player. East's 7'1" Adam Woodbury had 19 points, 18 rebounds, and was close to double figures in blocked shots.
In the biggest game of the early season, Woodbury carried second-ranked East to a 59-51 win over their arch rivals, the top team in Class 3A.
"It was a fantastic performance out of Adam," said East head coach Jeff Vanderloo. "There were so many good players on the floor, and to basically take that game over like he did last night was huge."
"That was fun getting out there in front of a big crowd like that," said Woodbury. "Being able to beat those guys was fun and we really stepped up as a team and played well."
Last year as a sophomore, Woodbury led East to the state tournament, putting in 17 points and 10 rebounds a game. This year, he's upped his scoring average to 20 a night, but he still shares the ball.
"A rebound, a board, a block, anything, just getting it out and creating transition and tempo...just starting things up faster and getting out," said Woodbury. "Just trying to get out and score easy buckets and try to speed the game up a little bit."
With his size, Woodbury has had the attention of college scouts for years. He says he'll wait until his senior year to choose a school. The 16-year-old admits all the attention once bothered him.
"It used to. It definitely had a little effect on me when I was younger but now I just try to get used to it. It actually brings a little motivation to step my game up. Especially with AAU, I've been playing in front of a lot of coaches there. It's been a good experience."
"The thing we continue to stress to Adam is go out there and do the best that you can do," added Vanderloo. "You go out and sellout every night..we're the only people we got to please. We don't have to please everybody else. If he's doing what he needs to be doing, that's why you play the game."
"I'm trying to get used to it," Woodbury says. "It's just going to be a part of my everyday life from now on. It definitely has it's perks. It's definitely something different than everyone else has to deal with. I just have to try to have fun with it."
East will host Sgt. Bluff-Luton on Friday night.
