SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - An altercation inside a Sioux City home Monday morning leaves a pregnant woman stabbed. The man with the knife, police believe, was the father of the unborn child.
Sioux City police say 20-year-old Kassandra Smith is in Mercy Medical Center. Authorities say Smith dialed 911 just before 10:00 Monday morning, reporting she had been stabbed several times after fighting with her estranged boyfriend.
Police say Smith was conscious and breathing when they arrived at the home she shared with 20-year-old Thomas Rausch, Junior, at 1807 South Hennepin in the Morningside neighborhood.
He is charged with attempted murder, which carries a 25-year maximum sentence, if he is convicted. Rausch also faces one charge of "non-consensual termination of pregnancy," though police have not released the unborn baby's condition.
Smith's condition is also unknown, but police say she had many stab wounds when they found her. "I think it would be a fair assessment to say, over the majority of her body," said Lt. Mark Kirkpatrick.
A two-year-old, who Lt. Kirkpatrick says is Smith's child, was home at the time of the stabbing. That child was unharmed, and is staying with family members.
Rausch is in the Woodbury County Jail on $500,000 bond.
He faced arraignment Monday afternoon, and was silent throughout most of it, but did ask the judge, "Did she make it?" He will be back in Woodbury County court for his preliminary hearing on February 3.
