SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- One day after she was stabbed multiple times, a pregnant Sioux City woman continues her recovery at Mercy Medical Center. We are now learning more about how the altercation occurred.
NewsChannel 4 has obtained the Sioux City Police Department's criminal complaint, explaining what went on inside Kasandra Smith's home at the time of the stabbing. It details a violent encounter.
At 9:50, Monday morning, 20-year-old Kasandra Smith dials 911 in urgent of help, saying she's been stabbed. The man with the knife, police say, was Smith's estranged boyfriend, 20-year-old Thomas Rausch, Jr.
Court records allege Rausch entered the home to gather some belongings, but took out a knife, walked up behind Smith and cut her throat. Authorities say he then stabbed her six more times, causing serious wounds.
When Sioux City police arrived at their home at 1807 South Hennepin Street, Smith was conscious and breathing.
The criminal complaint says Rausch went to the home with the intent to kill Smith and possibly her unborn child.
Smith's condition is being kept private, and so is that of the unborn child's. Sioux City police say Rausch is the father of that child.
Rausch is in the Woodbury County Jail, on $500,000 bond. He faces charges of attempted murder, and nonconsensual termination of a pregnancy.
Rausch will be back in Woodbury County Court for his preliminary hearing on February 3. If convicted of both charges, Rausch could spend a total of up to 27 years behind bars.
Smith's two-year-old child was in the home when the stabbing occurred, but was not injured and is staying with family.
