SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- The doors to the past were open Saturday at the grand opening of the Sioux City Public Museum. It took five years and $12.5 million for it to move to its new home on Fourth Street.
If you've ever wanted to take a trip back in time, now's your chance.
"I think it's the best museum in the world," said 11 year old Landon Sturtevant.
It's chock-full of exhibits. You can spin back the hands of time and peek at what Sioux City used to look like hundreds of years ago.
"With it you can go back in Sioux City's history and see different parts of downtown, you can see the city grow," said museum volunteer Rachelle Barnum.
Free of nasal nightmares, you can finally stand "downwind" of Sioux City's stock yards at their exhibit. Then chat it up with some ghosts of the past around the corner. Or, maybe, you just want to mellow out with a listen to "old-time" radio.
"I have to remind people to look up when they are in the museum. You have the Kari-Keen Airplane, you've got soapbox derbies suspended. All kinds of things, happening, above your head," said museum director Steve Hansen.
A hazardous looking, sky high, high rise is one you'll have to check out. Called the "Disaster Wall", it's an interactive theater chronicling some of Sioux City's greatest mishaps.
"The smoke coming out of it, that was cool," said Tristan Heaton.
There's so much in the museum, you might struggle to find the time to see it.
"I think I could spend a couple of days here, there's so much to see, so much to do and so many wonderful facts to read about," said mother of two Tina Buhrman.
"It is so spectacular you can't cover it in on trip around," said visitor Claire O'Brien
If it happened in Sioux City chances are you'll find it inside the S.C.P.M. walls.
"We're really impressed so far," said father Corey Heaton.
"I think they got it right," said lifelong resident Gary Trapp.
It's a museum that's sure to last the test of time.
More good news... The museum will be open six days a week. Admission is free.
