Federal aid unlikely for private SD flood losses

State officials say the amount of spring flood damage to homes and other private property in South Dakota might fall short of standards for individual aid from the federal government.
Teams of state and federal officials on Monday plan to begin assessing flood damage to public infrastructure in counties that have passed disaster resolutions. Gov. Dennis Daugaard says he expects the assessment will support a request for a presidential disaster declaration to help with the cost of repairs on public property such as roads.
State Emergency Management Director Kristi Turman says people shouldn't get their hopes up about federal assistance for private losses.
