Voters approve measure to fund new Clay County, IA jail

Posted:

SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) - In Clay County, Iowa, voters have approved a plan to build a new county jail.

1,090 voters said "yes" to the measure. That's 65% of the vote. It needed just 60% to pass.

The new building would actually combine the jail and sheriff's office into one building. Building the jail won't raise taxes. It would simple renew an expiring 43-cent bond.

The more-than 70-year-old jail, in Spencer, has security and maintenance issues. In fact, state officials said if issues weren't fixed by the end of the year, the jail will shut down.

Total cost for the new jail? $5.6-million.
