The U.S. Postal Service announced Friday afternoon that Sioux City's mail processing center will close and operations will move to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Postal officials say the closure impacts 28 jobs and that affected career employees will be reassigned to the Sioux Falls processing center or to other vacant positions in the immediate area.
Officials cite a 20 percent decline in mail volume in the last few years for the move.
A study to help make the decision started in March.
"But the good news for our customers is that collection box pick up times won't change as a result of this. Our retail services won't change as a result of this. Business mail acceptance will remain the same and a local post mark will still be available for stamp first class mail," said Richard Watkins, USPS Corporate Communications.
In a statement from the postal service officials says this move will not affect 97-percent of local mail delivery.
Officials say the transition from the Sioux City facility to the Sioux Falls center will be completed by October.
City Manager Paul Eckert released a statement this afternoon saying,"Contrary to the Postal Service's public relations statement, Sioux City's "community's input" was "not valued" or "carefully considered."
He went on to say that "Sioux City will appeal this decision to the highest authorities and is pursuing a variety of legal actions."
