OA-BCIG districts will vote on merger

Since 2009, the Odebolt-Arthur and Battle Creek-Ida Grove school districts have been operating as OA-BCIG. It's a lot of letters to remember, but both districts agree it's working.

Now, people living in both districts will vote to make it official. Wednesday evening in Ida Grove, AEA leaders decided to move forward with the proposal.

For the past ten years, both districts have faced declining enrollment at a rate of 2.5% each year, not to mention ever-tightening budgets.

"We want the absolute best education program along with all the activities we can put together for a full package that we can give to these children," said OA-BCIG superintendent Danielle Trimble.

As it stands, the districts share teachers, a superintendent and athletics. Folks say that's been a success, so if the merger is approved it should be an easy transition.

"I think it's something that's going to have to be done, I'm just glad we went closer with Ida Grove than going the other way," said Brad Bengford of Odebolt, IA.

"I think it would greatly benefit both the school districts and I'm very much in favor of it," said Jayne Harter of Ida Grove, IA.

People in both districts will cast their ballots on September 13. If approved, the merger would kick in for the 2012-2013 school year.

The high school would be in Ida Grove, the middle school in Odebolt, with an elementary school in both towns. Regardless of the vote's outcome, the fourth through sixth grade building in Battle Creek will close after next school year.
