Quick fixes can help you save money on your energy bill

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

During a heat wave like this, nothing beats getting out of the warmth and into air conditioning. But as the temperature rises, so does your bill.

Just like you would "winterize" your home, it's also helpful to "summerize." MidAmerican Energy says a few simple fixes around the house can keep your comfort more affordable.

One of them is clearing the way around any vents.

"Your heating and cooling equipment is set up to where they need that cold air return, plus your regular register vent's clear," said MidAmerican energy efficiency specialist Kim Willer.

Willer says windows are important too. Make sure you fill in any cracks to keep cool air in and warm air out

"The more you fill those cracks, it'll save you energy in the summer and the winter," said Willer.

Plus, keep your shades down and don't forget to run your ceiling fans, which circulate the cooler air.

Obviously, the thermostat plays a big part in your bill and Willer says every degree you turn it up will save you up to 5% each month. Willer recommends setting it at 78 degrees.

In the kitchen, try to save all major cooking for the evening when it's cooler.

"The more you can save, the better off you are," said Willer.

The less energy you use also helps MidAmerican. Its grid has a capacity of 7,000 megawatts. Right now, it's close to hitting last year's peak of 4,500.

Even though many people have the air conditioning cranked, MidAmerican says at this point there's no danger of power outages.
