A South Sioux City-native was among 30 U.S. military personnel killed when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan on Saturday.
John Douangdara was a 2003 South Sioux City high school graduate. He served as a dog handler of the Navy's "SEAL Team 6".
The U.S.-led coalition says that the 30 U.S. troops and seven Afghan soldiers who died were on a mission targeting a Taliban leader.
In a statement released Monday night, NATO said an insurgent with a rocket-propelled grenade reportedly fired on the chopper, which was transporting the U.S. and Afghan troops to the scene of an ongoing fight between coalition forces and insurgents.
