Moisture meter lets flood victims know when it's safe to return

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (KTIV) -

As flood victims begin to move back into their homes, there's a tool that's very helpful for knowing when it's safe.

A moisture meter measures the amount of water inside materials that may have been exposed to flooding.

UNL Extension says it's very useful in wall studs and drywall.

"It's a good starting point to know that your house is actually becoming dry and getting closer and the point where you actually want to close it back in," said Carol Larvick of UNL Extension.

Meters typically run more than $100, but UNL Extension in Dakota City has one it can loan out.  Most contractors also use the tool.
