COPY-Sioux County fields many opinions on gun range

A decision could come Tuesday night on a proposed shooting range in Sioux County, IA. The plan has created quite a bit of controversy with neighbors living near the proposed Sandy Hollow Recreational Complex.

Those opposed believe the shooting range, on a former golf course near Sioux Center, would be too noisy and create ground pollution because of lead in the bullets.

County planning and zoning officials have already received dozens of letters from people on both sides of the issue.

Jennie Erwin told the county, "The work done at Sandy Hollow has brought back into service an area that was mostly going to weeds. It will be a great attraction for the city, and I think, will be well used."

On the flip side, Elson Schut says, "Gun ranges are the leading polluter of ground water. Being located on an aquifer with shallow wells, the risk of lead poisoning increases dramatically."

The Sioux County Board of Supervisors will hold a public forum and possibly make a decision, on whether to allow the gun range. It takes place on Tuesday night at 7:00 at the county courthouse in Orange City.
