Matt Breen says, "Today on "Heart Health" our topic... belly fat. Dr. Artang, the question seems simple, why is belly fat bad?"
Dr. Ramin Artang, Mercy Medical Center, says, "Belly fat is bad because it is a sign of a relatively unhealthy lifestyle with a low exercise level and a high fat diet."
Matt Breen says, "What's a quick way to know if your belly fat is bad?"
Dr. Ramin Artang, Mercy Medical Center, says, "The simplest way is just using a tape. The limits for ladies are 35-inches, and for gentlemen is 40-inches. So, if you are 35, or above, you are at risk."
Matt Breen says, "There's another way to know if your belly fat's bad, and that's BMI. What that?"
Dr. Ramin Artang, Mercy Medical Center, says, "There's a different way to know if your body fat's bad and that's Body Mass Index, or BMI. That''s calculated by your body weight and height, and your doctor can help you with that."
Matt Breen says, "We can all see the belly fat on the outside. But, there's also fat inside the body in some people."
Dr. Ramin Artang, Mercy Medical Center, says "When you see a person with a large belly, some of that fat is under the skin. In gentlemen its usually in the belly area. And, in ladies, it's usually arms and the buttocks area. But. some of that fat is also inside. It's in-between the internal organs of the body. And, that seems to be a type of fat that puts a person at a high risk of cardiovascular disease."
Matt Breen says, "What's the best way to get rid of this belly fat, and this visceral fat?
Dr. Ramin Artang, Mercy Medical Center, says "The best way goes back to the reason you are fat in the first place... and that is a healthier lifestyle. Increase your activity, exercise, and modify your diet. Change it to low fat, and a higher content of vegetables, and lean meat."
