SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The final chapter in the fight to keep Sioux City's mail processing plant is over.
Saturday, those operations began the transition to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The last piece of mail went through the mail processing center Saturday morning.
Now the only trucks at the dock are the ones that will take the actual processing equipment 72 miles north.
But, with the recent closings of the two Sioux City post office branches and now this center, Postmaster Lori Slater-Trautwein says that making sure employees have a job has and will be one of the company's priorities.
"We're doing everything we can to keep employees gainfully employed and it may take a couple months to a few months to get everybody out there, but it's definitely a project that we want to get everybody a home," said Lori Slater-Trautwein Sioux City Postmaster.
And she admits its been a tight timeline and a tough turn around.
"Less than 90 days ago we found out we were closing and that the date was October 1st. We basically empty a 90-thousand square foot building and process mail and close two stations at the same time. So definitely it's been a roller coaster of emotions," said Lori Slater-Trautwein Sioux City Postmaster.
The USPS had used the building since the late 90's and it's expected to be sold in the near future.
