It's not easy being the "other" volleyball team in Hull, Iowa. Western Christian has won 13 state titles. But Boyden-Hull is making a name for themselves, too. The Comets are ranked 4th in Class 1A and are hoping 13 upperclassmen can lead them to state for the first time in 20 years.
A team that plays together, wins together. It might be Boyden-Hull's secret to success.
"We're very close and we play together," said Boyden-Hull junior Allison Te Slaa. "We're good friends."
With the girls banded together, they follow a basic playbook. While most teams focus on attack, the Comets employ solid defense and have great depth.
"I don't think they can pick on someone and say 'we need to stop her.' We have a balanced attack and a setter than can get us every attack," said senior Whitney Vander Maten.
"It's a big part of our game. We take pride in making teams earn points," said Boyden-Hull head coach Dean Hoogeveen. "It's tough to get a ball down against us. I think that is why we have been successful over the year."
The girls would love to add a volleyball trophy to the trophy case this year and they think this is the year to do it. A loss last year to Gehlen Catholic in the substate finals has only made the Comets crave a trip to Cedar Rapids more.
"We really want to make it to state," said Vander Maten. "It's been since 1991 that Boyden-Hull has made it to state."
A 20-year drought that could be broken.
"We make teams come out and beat us," said coach Hoogeveen. "It's tough to beat us I think."
