The Iowa State Patrol says three people died in a collision that happened while a trooper was conducting a traffic stop near Harlan in western Iowa.
KETV-TV in Omaha, Neb. says the accident happened on U.S. Highway 59 Wednesday morning. The patrol says a trooper had pulled over a vehicle and a southbound car moved into the northbound lane to pass the trooper and collided nearly head-on with an SUV.
Two people in the passing car and the SUV driver were killed. Their names haven't been released.
The force of the impact caused the passing car to spin and hit the trooper's car. The trooper wasn't in the squad car and wasn't injured. The car the trooper had pulled over wasn't damaged.
