Branstad: Survey shows support for school changes

Gov. Terry Branstad says a survey of participants in last summer's education summit shows broad agreement that the state's school system needs an overhaul.

The governor says roughly 85 percent of those surveyed agree that student performance has stagnated over the past decade, and major changes are needed. He says the survey results give him momentum to propose big changes to Iowa's school system when lawmakers convene next month.

Branstad is likely to propose tougher standards for teacher education and changes to student evaluations. He says details will be released before lawmakers convene on Jan. 9.

The governor spoke Monday at his weekly news conference.

The survey was sent by email to about 1,600 people, most of them educators. Branstad says 598 responded.
