ALTON, Iowa (KTIV) -
A runoff election is underway for a city council race in Alton, Iowa.
Matthew Laverman and Mary Jenkins were the top two vote getters in November for the race to fill a vacancy on the council.
The city of Alton is under a run off ordinance, meaning the winner needs to get a majority out of those that voted.
This means Laverman or Jenkins needed to get 79 votes to be declared a winner.
Since neither of the candidates got that a run off must be done.
Polls are open until eight Tuesday night.
