NECC Board of Governors chairman stepping down

NORFOLK, NE (KTIV) -

Northeast Community College Board of Governors will have a vacancy in the chairman's position with the coming new year.  Board President Van Phillips of South Sioux stepped down from the post Thursday and says he will not seek re-election.

Van Phillips has been on the Northeast Board of Governors for eight years.  He recently announced that he is throwing his hat into the race for Nebraska's District 17 State Senate seat.  With that race in his future, Phillips says he will not serve another term on the Northeast board.   State Statues say a person cannot serve on two high elective offices simultaneously. As you heard this week, Phillips will not be alone the race for the Unicameral.

Former Dakota City educator Ron Hartnett has announced that he will also run for the position.   The legislative seat is currently held by Senator Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins. So far there's no word on whether he will seek re-election.
