Great gifts for the golden years

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Sometimes, the people you've know the longest are the hardest to buy for.

Parents and grandparents who seem to have everything.

You want to get them something for Christmas but what do they need?

And more importantly, what do they want?

We went straight to the source to get some answers.

"They hate to say, I want this or I want that, and a lot of older people have a lot of things too," said Sandy Graser of Sioux City.

Sound familiar?  Shopping for seniors isn't always easy, but it's not as difficult as you think.

"I always say gift certificates you know to eat, groceries, get your car washed," said Graser.

"When they have everything you can always get food supplies. Their favorite things to eat," said Sandy Fravel of Sioux City.

"I think anybody would love to have their utility bill pre-paid, but magazine subscriptions, old adults really like to read. Newspaper subscriptions I think would be very good," said Jeff Loffswold, Executive Director Siouxland Center for Active Generations.

"I think as we get older the gift of time and being with our loved ones and family and friends. It isn't always about money. No definitely not," said Fravel.

"I just think anything that can help their daily lives out and make it a lot easier would be very much appreciated," said Loffswold.

"Visiting is especially important, taking them to the store, offering a gift of time," said Fravel.

Experts say gifts that keep a senior active are also good to give.

Like a pre-paid cab or bus 'tickets' or a health club membership, check for senior discounts.

And for those who need a helping hand a coupon book promising to run errands or do housework, like washing windows or shoveling the snow.

So whether the present is bought, made, or worked for, with some thought, any gift you get them will go a long way.

"I don't think there's what you call any bad gift," said Graser.
