Whittier closure certain, date of closure is uncertain

The Sioux City Community School Board has voted, 4-3, to close Whittier Elementary School.

But, the closure won't come until the May before the remodel, or rebuild, of Washington Elementary School is complete.

That date is still up in the air.

The original motion would have closed Whittier at the end of the 2013 - 2014 year. But, that was amended during Monday night's meeting.

Whittier is more than a century old. School District Administration says they'd like to rebuild it, but don't have the money. So they've recommended to the board closing the facility to save an estimated $270-,000 a year.

Students, teachers and staff would be split amongst five other elementary schools in the Morningside Area.
