The birth rate is down in South Dakota by more than 400 through October of this year.
This continues the states 3 year trend of declining birth rates.
The state health department says there have been 9,594 births through October, down more than 4% from the 5 year average.
South Dakota's lower birth rate mirrors a nationwide plunge in births since 2008, which officials say may be recession-related.
Nebraska is among three states that saw a small increase in their birth rates between 2008 and 2010.
