Biofuels getting most benefit from public funds

The parent company of a Hartley, Iowa ethanol plant tops the list of businesses receiving state aid.

In fact, new figures show biofuels companies made up more than half of the top 50 recipients since 2003.

Texas oil giant, Valero Energy, which took over for bankrupt VeraSun three years ago, has received 59 million dollars in assistance.

Valero also owns plants in Albert City, Charles City, and Fort Dodge.

Critics question the amount of public money pumped into the industry, saying the state's corn supply would have seen the biofuel plants locate in Iowa anyway.
