DAKOTA DUNES, S.D. (KTIV) -
A local bank has written a big check to build homes for folks who couldn't otherwise afford them.
Today, First Financial Bank gave $15,000 to Siouxland Habitat for Humanity to help build 5 or 6 homes in North Sioux City.
The city also has a role in the project, donating land that the homes will sit on.
Habitat for Humanity organizers say having affordable housing does more than just give folks the opportunity to work, and live, in the same community.
"It develops that pride of ownership but also that civic commitment because they've had a chance to have other people in their community help them, such as this opportunity that first financial is providing for them. It shows that other people are committed to that civic involvement and they feel that commitment too," said Teresa Wolff, Development Director for Siouxland Habitat for Humanity.
With each house costing $80,000, the total cost of the project is between $400,000 and $500,000.
