A proposal to redesign South Dakota's state flag has been rejected in the legislature. A House committee voted down the plan Monday morning by a vote of 7-to-4. House Democratic Leader Bernie Hunhoff of Yankton led the push for a change. His bill originally proposed this design by a Spearfish artist, featuring a Native American medicine wheel surrounded by sunshine rays on a blue background.
Hunhoff changed his bill Monday morning to propose a competition for a new design. But members of the Republican majority said they don't want to abandon a flag that has featured the state seal for more than a century.
