Investigators raise questions about shooting at Onawa business

ONAWA, Iowa (KTIV) -

Sunday, we told you about a man who claimed he got shot after interrupting burglars at his truck maintenance shop in Onawa, Iowa. After a little more investigation, authorities aren't sure that's the case.

Thirty-two year old Darren Hieber told police, at around six Sunday night, he arrived at his shop, finding burglars and a gunshot to the leg.

"We're investigating it as the victim walking in on a burglary in progress and was subsequently shot during the possible commission of that crime, and right now it's still pretty early in the investigation," said DCI Special Agent Daniel Dawson Sunday night.

After looking into the case a little deeper, on Monday, authorities say they don't believe it was a burglary or violent crime. They say Hieber, who owns Hieber Trucking, was shot by one of his employees, 23 year old Brady Chapman.

"Through the investigation we discovered that Brady Chapman shot Darren Hieber. As far as the 'burglary in progress,' we don't believe that was accurate," said Assistant Chief Jim Fouts with the Onawa Police.

Officials can tell us they believe both men arrived together and didn't get into a conflict. But as to how Hieber wound up wounded, we're clueless, at least for now.

"We have a belief, but I am not going to release that information, because it's still unfolding," said Fouts.

Hieber's wounds were considered "non-life threatening." He was taken to Burgess Health Center.

At this point no charges have been filed against either man.

Authorities say they expect to have more information in coming days.
