DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) -

The United States and China have agreed to sign a five-year agreement that will guide discussions on food security, food safety and sustainable agriculture. The deal was announced this morning at the first US-China agriculture symposium in Des Moines by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, and China's Minister of Agriculture.

Vilsack says the agreement further strengthens the cooperation between the world's largest agricultural producers. It will become the guiding document for high level discussion on agricultural policy and trade.

The Chinese agriculture minister says the deal provides key areas where the two countries can broaden cooperation, promote steady development of agriculture and increase farmer income.
