Stanton schools in lockdown during standoff

STANTON, Neb. (KTIV) -

Stanton, Nebraska is a town of 6,100 people. So you can imagine many were on edge with law enforcement surrounding a home. A Nebraska State Patrol helicopter was even flying overhead.

During Thursday's standoff, schools in Stanton were locked down. The middle and high school building is on the north side of town.

However, the elementary school is only a few blocks from the mobile home park where officers had Carlos Arevalo-Martinez holed up.

The Superintendent said keeping the 450 students in the building was a much safer option than allowing students to leave, and potentially be put in harm's way.

"I was amazed with both the parents and the students with their level of understanding of this, because the worst thing that could happen for us, would be to have parents show up at the door and demand their students to be released, " said Michael Sieh, Stanton Superintendent.

Sieh said everyone was calm and parents received several text updates as the situation unfolded.

Students were even fed during that time.

They were allowed to leave shortly after 6 p.m. when authorities gave them the all clear.
