Johnston, Iowa (AP) -
Two members of the Iowa Board of Regents are warning that spending cuts being debate in the Legislature could lead to another tuition increase.
Board President Craig Lang says the regents approved a 3.75 percent increase in tuition beginning in fall 2012 based on the assumption that lawmakers would approve their budget request.
House Republicans have proposed deep cuts in that budget, and Lang says that could force the regents to raise tuition again.
Lang and Regent Bruce Rastetter made their comments Friday during a taping of the Iowa Public Television program, "Iowa Press."
Rastetter says Gov. Terry Branstad's proposed budget would prevent a tuition increase, and he's confident lawmakers will approve a budget that will avoid further raising costs for students.
