SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Hawaiian Cruise Week has started at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations in Sioux City.
The "Center Cruise Line" this year has some fun filled daily activities and one that started Monday involved ice, a chain saw, and a fish.
The AWESOME ICE sculptor carved out his creation for the seniors on Monday and here he describes how he does his masterpieces.
"So today since we are going on a cruise I thought I would make an angel fish"," said Jeff Mueller, AWESOME ICE.
"I use the templates when I have a complicated design," said Mueller.
"I'll go ahead and trim out the design here for the basic cut out of the angel fish," said Mueller.
"You get the big chunks out of the way and then I'll start doing the fine detail after that," said Mueller.
"I use everything from chainsaws to assorted chisels and I'll also use a lot of dremel tools and die grinder bits. A lot of the same stuff you use for wood carving," said Mueller.
"So now once I kind of get the basic design in here. I'm going to end up hollowing the middle out here. You want to be careful not to thin the ice up anymore until after I've narrowed all of the stuff up out on the top. So now what I am going to do now is get more of the shape of the fish going and the contours and the curves of the thing," said Mueller.
"I enjoy doing them. A lot of the time, it's something I just have to make the time for because you can't rush it. If I rush it, it just doesn't look as beautiful," said Mueller.
Mueller says the sculpture will be on display Tuesday at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations and it will last five to six hours before melting away.
