NORFOLK, Neb (KTIV/US92) -
The Madison County, Nebraska Board of Equalization has voted to exempt the City of Norfolk from paying property taxes on its new administration building. The vote, however, was against the recommendation of Madison County Assessor Jeff Hackerott.
During Tuesday's meeting Hackerott said the more than $23,000 in property taxes on Norfolk's new administration facility should be paid based on the opinion he received from the State Department of Revenue. The city purchased the $1.9 million building on north 5th Street through a lease-purchase via a public facilities corporation.
The City of Norfolk is watching a bill in the Legislature which would allow the tax exemptions on lease-purchases, leaving Hackerott's objection null and void.
The Board of Equalization not only exempted the Norfolk City building, but also the Northeast Community College Welcome Center and the Northeast Nebraska Juvenile Services building in Madison. The County Assessor had recommended to deny exemption on all three.
The Department of Revenue may appeal the boards ruling in the future.
