Early season insects doesn't mean summer swarm

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

The early warm weather has folks bringing out shorts, t-shirts, and grills. But, it also brings out bugs as well. Officials say that the mild winter, plus the early season warmth has brought out the bugs a few weeks ahead of schedule. But while the insects are out now, it doesn't mean we'll have a swarm this summer.

"They're dependant upon humidity. They're dependant upon vegetation. If we really have a dry year, then it will affect their population significantly. If we have a wet year then many of them will survive," said Dan Nichols, master gardener from Sioux City.

Nichols says you can control some insects, like mosquitoes, by getting rid of standing water.
