Beef Products Incorporated, based in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota says it's suspending operations at three of four plants where Lean, Finely Textured Beef is produced.
Company spokesman Craig Letch on told The Associated Press today about the operations suspensions at plants in Texas, Kansas and Iowa ahead of a public announcement about the plan.
The ammonia-treated ingredient, known by the industry as LFTB, has been fully approved by the USDA, but has recently became a target of activists seeking to have it banned from supermarkets and school lunches.
