Tyson to modify production to meet demand after BPI announcement

Posted:

Without Lean, Finely Textured Beef in the marketplace, BPI says an additional 1.5-million head of cattle will be needed to make up for the loss of lean meat.

Tyson Foods, which is one of several beef processors that sell beef trimmings to BPI, says "The reduction of BPI's operations means less lean meat will be recovered and more of the beef trimmings will be converted into lower-value products."

Spokesperson Gary Mickelson says they're making some modifications in their production processes to adjust for this change.

Mickelson says they believe a decrease in BPI production may mean higher prices for consumers at the store, and will impact the prices for livestock producers
