Pioneer distribution center in Spencer, Iowa to open this fall

SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) -

Land for the Green Industrial Center was annexed into Spencer more than two years ago. Since then, the area has been looked as a potential site for business.  Pioneer Hi-Bred, a worldwide company based out Dupont, Del., believes the Green Industrial Center is a perfect place for their business.

"It just took the right project and the right timing for this to come together. So, we're very pleased to have an occupant in the park," said Steve Pick, general manager and CEO for Spencer Municipal Utilities.

In the distribution world, location is imperative.  In Spencer, Iowa, officials are confident the town can cater to all four states in its region and beyond.

"To know that someone has confidence in Spencer and the Spencer area, and I think that's a great benefit we will derive from this," said Bob Rose, program director for Spencer Main Street Company.

Rose says the new distribution center will create jobs and it shows great confidence in the community by a major corporation.  The area's been actively promoted since that 2009 annexation, and town officials are ready to get the process started.

"We feel fortunate to be enabled to have the space that they required and we're really looking forward to it," said Rose.

The $5.5 million facility will cover more than 20 acres on the Southeast side of Spencer. The warehouse facility will be over 200,000 square feet. Pick is excited that the park could have an immediate impact on the public as a whole.

"From the community standpoint, it's a great opportunity to get the park established and get a business in here that hopefully draws some more people into the park here," said Pick.

It should be a fairly quick turnaround for the town, too. Pioneer hopes to have the facility ready to go by October.

Officials estimate the distribution center will create 10 to 12 jobs with the potential for more than 20 later on.
