School will be out forever for two Morningside elementary schools
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The school year is coming to a close for many area students.
At the same time two area schools will close for good.
But while the buildings will soon sit empty its legacy will live on.
Sunday, Joy Elementary and Longfellow Elementary, both in Morningside, opened their doors to the public one last time.
They'll both close at the end of the school year.
Former students roamed the halls and flipped through yearbooks.
"Any connection they may have had to joy school. To get an opportunity to come in and look it over when it's still up and running as a school," said Mary Motz, Joy & Longfellow Elementary Principal.
"Truly one of the highlights of teaching is having former students come back to visit and to find out what they're doing and where they're at now," said Deb Ammons Longfellow Elementary reading teacher.
Students from both schools will attend the newly built Spaulding Elementary in the fall.
"It's going to be nice to have everybody under one roof and so we can be a one stop shop for everybody," said Tina Buhrman, Joy Elementary 5th grade teacher.
"Like I said a change like this is bittersweet. So we're looking forward to the new building," said Ammons.
Looking forward to the future while remembering the past.
