SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Sioux City may take over more of the financial burden of operating the downtown skywalk.
On Monday, the city council will be asked to assume 10% more of those costs.
Right now, the city pays 30%, and downtown businesses attached to the skywalk pay 70%.
Under this agreement the city would not only begin covering 40% of operational costs, they would also fund major capital projects, up to $52,000 a year. This amounts to an $80,000 increase to the city.
The subsidy would be paid for with tax revenue generated in the central business district. Downtown businesses had requested the city flip the formula and take over 70% of the costs.
