BPI will eliminate operations at three plants

Beef Products Incorporated has announced it will eliminate hundreds of jobs at three of its plants after "attacks" started a national outcry about the safety of its products.

Last month, BPI made a decision to shut down operations at plants in Amarillo, Texas, Garden City, Kansas, and Waterloo, Iowa in effort to rebuild its markets after "misguided attacks" about its Boneless Lean Beef Trimmings. The company went on paying full salaries to over 650 employees.

In a statement released to KTIV Monday, spokesperson Rich Jochum said, "While we had hoped to be able to resume operation at those plants, that is not going to be possible in the immediate future and the temporary suspension of operations will in fact result in the elimination of those jobs effective May 25, 2012."

Jochum says the company will continue to operate its facility in South Sioux City at reduced capacity.
