NEAR YANKTON, S.D. (KTIV) -
It was something few have ever seen. For the first time in about 30 years, no water was flowing through either the power plant, or spillway, at Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, South Dakota.
The US Army Corps of Engineers shut it down from eight to four Wednesday to investigate some minor damage done by last summer's floods.
The corps says high water eroded a small amount of concrete off a slab in front of the spillway. Water also ate away some support gravel underneath that slab. Crews were walking the slab this morning, using radar to see through the cement, and gauge just how much gravel is gone.
Dam officials say they found a few voids, but nothing to be concerned about. They plan to do repairs this summer.
Gavins Point Dam was built in the 50's. Officials say, if properly maintained, it could last for 200 years.
