SE South Dakota home engulfed when firefighters arrive

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -

Fire has destroyed a home north of Vermillion, South Dakota.

The Friday fire kept members of the town's fire department busy for much of the day.

Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe says the fire was reported by Annar and Marilyn Pettersen around 4:30 a.m. after smoke detectors woke the couple.

They escaped, but the house was engulfed in flames by the time firemen arrived.

The cause is under investigation.
