MidAmerican weighing options on nuclear power

Posted:
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -

MidAmerican Energy officials are studying their options for nuclear power since the Iowa Legislature adjourned without taking action on a bill the company sought.

The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports a MidAmerican spokeswoman says the company is evaluating future options but says it's premature to speak in detail about plans

The bill considered by lawmakers would have established a state regulatory structure to allow construction of a nuclear power plant in Iowa.

MidAmerican is exploring a new technology using small modular reactors. Building a plant would cost between $1 billion and $2 billion.

The Republican-led Iowa House approved a measure but the issue stalled in the Senate. Opponents claim the proposed financing arrangement would make ratepayers bear significant costs instead of investors.
