Pint-sized pedalers learn to ride in park named after friend

NORFOLK, Neb. (US92) -

Norfolk's Pedal Park not only serves the kids in the community, it also captures the spirit of a little boy who died in an accident five years ago.

Looking at Norfolk's Pedal Park, you might think that it looks like any residential neighborhood, but that's the point. The many features of the park are designed to teach children the rules of the road and how to bicycle safely.

"We have a number of permanent signs. We've got stop signs, dead ends and that type of thing. And it gives a chance for the children to see the different signs, learn what they mean, learn how they should respond. And then we have an off-road course as well," said Norfolk Police Sergeant Don Miller.

Many kids came out Saturday for the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new Pedal Park, which also coincided with the annual Landon Bos Memorial Bicycle Rodeo, where kids can give their bikes a check up and get the proper rules of riding.

The event is held in memory of young Landon Bos, who died in a car/pedestrian accident five years ago. A permanent memorial is also the centerpiece of the new Pedal Park.

"He and five of his friends, they were the neighborhood bike riders at the time. They ran the neighborhood on their bikes, and yes he loved his bike. Many of the pictures we have of Landon are on his bike," said Landon's Father, David Bos.

Along with a long list of others, Bos and his wife Corinne were a critical part of the design and planning of Pedal Park. A project made possible thanks to donated land from the City and private donations.

"We have a name on this, and we are very close to that name, but the community is the heart. They have brought this together and make this go. We can't say enough. Corinne and I are just pleased to be a part of it, and it's all because of the community," said Bos.

Norfolk's new Pedal Park is free and open to the public.  The track that goes around Pedal Park is officially called "Landon Lane" in memory of Landon.
