NORFOLK, Neb. (KTIV/US92) -
A Norfolk, Nebraska neighborhood was evacuated and a school was locked down for more than two hours on Tuesday afternoon.
Police were notified about an unidentified man inside a home on Charolais Drive. They were told he was despondent, and had weapons.
Authorities blocked off local streets, and locked down nearby Bel Air Elementary. The subject left the house at about 3:30. At that time, police detonated a "flash-bang" distraction device, so they could take him into custody.
Local homeowners say the whole thing escalated in the blink of an eye.
"I was mowing the yard and a police officer with a rifle came running through my yard. I got a little jumpy, turned off the lawnmower, ran in and made sure the kids were alright. I locked everything up and just peeked out the window, kind of curious to see what was going on," said neighbor Daylon Faber.
Authorities took the man to a hospital. Students were allowed to leave the nearby school after about an hour.
