Tribe asks feds to reopen 39 cases

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -

Oglala Sioux tribal officials are presenting a list of nearly 40 deaths they want the federal government to reopen.
Tribal officials claim the deaths are unsolved murders, while the FBI considers many of the cases closed. The tribe previously had requested that dozens of murder cases, especially from the 1970s, be reopened but hadn't identified specific victims. The AP obtained the list of victim names Thursday from a tribal lawyer; the list hasn't otherwise been made public.
A spokesman for the FBI said last month that the agency would not reopen any of the closed cases absent new information.
Tribal officials say the list naming 39 people who died on or near the reservation is being given to U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson on Thursday.
