Arnolds Park, IOWA (KTIV) -
Up in the Iowa Great Lakes, an old favorite reopened for business Saturday. Historic Arnolds Park Amusement Park's familiar sights and sounds keep folks coming back year after year.
"I love it here; it's really peaceful, calm. I like the people. It's a good getaway from Minnesota," said Molly Petron.
For some, the trip to Arnolds Park is an annual tradition.
"We usually come down here every year after they get out of school. School usually get out on Thursday night, then we drive up here and spend the weekend," said Justin Steinhauser.
"Go swimming, of course. I love swimming," said Isabella Steinhauser.
This year, some customers will get some new food choices.
"It's a potato that's cut, swirled and then deep-fat fried. Not somebody that's going to get that that is going to be looking to save on calories," said Di Lorenzen, the park's communications director.
But it's not just those new options that have folks lining up.
"We're feeling like we're going to have a great summer here," said Lorenzen. "You know everyone's talking about "stay-cations," and we're a great destination."
For the younger guests: a merry-go-round and a new train to ride around the park. But for most, the pick of the day was an 85-year old Legend.
"It's a little freaky, but not really," said Cassidy Vant Hul.
"I seem to hold on a little tighter every year," said Stacie Moseley. "Yes, it gets a little bit more nerve-racking, but it's still fun, it's tradition, so we need to do it."
Some guests are more cautious, but still up for the ride and a good time.
"'Cuz it's a roller coaster, they're supposed to be scary," said Kylie Hanson.
The park is offering daily and seasonal passes and some that last throughout the entire summer. Park officials say membership numbers are already up from last year.
