NEAR NORTH SIOUX CITY, SD (KTIV) -
A year ago, people living in Riv-R-Land Estates were evacuated by rising flood waters on the Missouri River.
Many say their faith got them through the disaster as it trudged on for months.
A special church service was put on for those residents Sunday.
The community came together at the place that gave them comfort throughout the past year.
But it was more than a church service; it was a way to bring closure to a flood that affected so many lives.
God could only answer why certain things happen to certain people and not to others," said Jeffery Vore, Ark United Methodist Church Pastor.
Jennifer and Brett Puetz caught up with fellow parishioners of Ark United Methodist Church. Last year's flood is a common topic of conversation.
But Sunday's conversation was a little different.
"We just wanted to say thank you and be able to say goodbye to last year and to start again," said Jennifer.
"The purpose of today's service out here in Riv-R-Land is to bring closure," said Vore.
Vore's sermon was about finding comfort even in a disaster.
"God has said that in this life you will have trouble. He didn't say you might have trouble. We know that He understands what we're going through," said Vore.
"Every disaster has blessings. God is always present," said Jennifer.
"It's not the end of the world. Just tighten up your reigns and move on. Things are going to be OK," said Brett.
The Puetz's found at least one positive in last year's flood.
"You know I think one of the blessings was it really brought the neighborhood close," said Brett.
Now all Jennifer, Brett, and the rest of the church have to worry about is if there's enough pancakes to go around.
"It's a year later and wow a year changes everything and I think everybody is in high spirits," said Jennifer.
More than 100 people attended the outdoor church service and breakfast.
