SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
After three years of delays a plan to expand the Hy-Vee Pharmacy in Sioux City is moving forward.
A new 14,000 square foot building will be 50% larger than the current facility on the corner of Pierce Street and Stone Park Boulevard.
Construction is set to begin in October and be finished next August.
Once the work is finished the old store will be torn down and turned into a parking lot.
A Hy-Vee representative says the company has spent several years trying to come up with a plan that will work for the neighborhood. The new drug store will also carry groceries and feature a cafe.
"We tried to keep our stores updated and modern on a regular basis, and this is a store that needed some help for some time. We're excited about the opportunity to build a new store and provide something that we think all the neighborhoods will like," David Bailie, Hy-Vee's Assistant Vice President
A half-dozen homes Hy-Vee originally purchased behind the pharmacy for the project have instead been sold to a local developer for rehabilitation.
