NEW YORK CITY (AP) -
The USDA gave the nation a choice, and it appears the majority of state's have said no to LFTB. Earlier this year, the U-S Department of Agriculture told schools they could opt out of getting ground beef made with lean finely textured beef as part of the National School Lunch Program. With all the decisions made, federal officials say every state but Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota said no to LFTB, while those three states say they'd like to continue ordering ground beef that may contain filler.
The product has been used for decades and federal regulators say it's safe and nutritious, but it became the center of attention after a derogatory name was given to it. LFTB is the main product produced by Beef Products, Incorporated based in Dakota Dunes, S.D. The company was forced to close three of its plants and lay off hundreds of workers because of the controversy over its product.
