DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -
Several veteran Iowa legislators are facing rare primary challenges, including a few who have been thrown into districts with other incumbents due to redistricting.
The once-a-decade process of redrawing political boundaries to account for population shifts pushed 41 lawmakers into districts with another incumbent. That accounts for nearly a third of the Legislature. That made some lawmakers more vulnerable, forcing them to introduce themselves to new constituents.
A number of legislative and congressional districts were redrawn, prompting a few legislators to retire to avoid a primary fight. Others moved to new districts to avoid facing an incumbent. Many candidates are new to politics.
In the House, Republicans have 26 primary races Tuesday. More than a quarter of them include incumbents facing challengers. No House Democratic incumbent faced a challenger.
